Printing photographs

Printing show portraits for a local musical theatre school today.

This is a super fun photoshoot for me. I've always loved musicals and dance. And it's lovely to see my daughter enjoy taking these classes and grow so much from them (she started ballet at 3 years old and then musical theatre soon after). 

The shoot day itself is hard. Getting through so many subjects and costume changes needs excellent time keeping. You do not have long to connect with the subject and achieve the shots you want. For many of the younger children, it may be the first time they have had professional photography. Being interested in this world and being a mum helps me work with children. I understand the dance styles and what poses to try.

I do work with new models in my editorial, fashion and beauty photography. But we have time to experiment in those shoots. No such time when you have to shoot 50+ subjects in one day. 

Then after the shoot, the post production is equally as challenging. 500+ images to sort through, decide on which to keep. Then edit, retouch, colour grade the keepers. 

My fashion and beauty shoots usually deliver 5-10 final images from a 3-4 hour shoot. The Ad Astra show portraits gallery has 455 finals and took about 5 hours to shoot.

My printer is a Canon pro-graf 300. It uses 10 ink cartridges so can produce an amazing range of colours. The ink is Lucia ink, which is pigment based. Pigment inks are more resistant to UV and ozone than dye based inks so will last longer before noticeably fading.  The whole system (printer, paper, colour profiles) produces the highest print quality (colour, lines, consistency).

I use this printing system for photographs I sell from my photoshoots. The pricing reflects the print quality achieved from this system.
